UPDATED FOR THE 2023 SPRING SEASON:

 

The Softball Board members and coaches are looking forward to another exciting softball season focused on teaching the girls the fundamentals of softball, building confidence, promoting teamwork, and having fun!   

 

General Information 

 

Girls in pre-kindergarten through 8th Grade are eligible to play in the following divisions:

Rookie League (Pre-K*):  Once again, the rookie league will be co-ed, with all boys and girls invited to play (see baseball section of website for details).

Minors Girls Softball (K-2nd Grade):  Tues/Thurs Nights 6:00 pm - Old York Fields; Saturday morning or early afternoon - various fields (Old York School / White Oak Park / Central Middle School)

Majors Girls Softball (3rd-5th Grade):  Tues/Thurs Nights 6:00 pm - White Oak Park, Fields 18 and 19; Saturday morning or early afternoon - various fields (White Oak Park / Central Middle School); Some Saturday games vs. teams from neighboring town(s) **

Seniors Girls Softball (6th-8th Grade): Mon/Wed Nights 6:00 pm - White Oak Park, Fields 18 and 19; Saturday morning or early afternoon - various fields (White Oak Park / Central Middle School); Some Saturday games vs. teams from neighboring town(s) **

* Pre-K girls must be at least five years of age prior to October 1, 2023 to join the co-ed Rookie League, which will focus on developing key baseball/softball skills.

** Games vs. nearby towns in the Majors and Seniors divisions.  Travel will be kept to a minimum with half of the inter-town games played in Branchburg.

 

Softball Season Highlights

 

  • Winter clinics at BSC focused on fielding, throwing, and hitting.

  • Weekly in-season pitching clinics in the Majors and Seniors divisions, including instruction in windmill pitching.

  • 12 to 16 games and in-season practices to allow the girls to continue to improve during the season.

  • Games vs. nearby town(s) in the Majors and Seniors divisions.  Travel will be kept to a minimum with half of the inter-town games played in Branchburg.

  • All-Star Games and Playoffs in the Majors and Seniors divisions.

  • Season runs from early April through mid-June.

  • Separate Fall Ball season also available in September/October.

 

Since this is recreational league, both first–time softball players and girls who have played during the past few years are encouraged to sign up for another great season of softball!

Minors Softball

  • Age Groups
    • Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade Girls
  • Schedule and Locations
    • Tuesday 6:00 p.m.
      • Locations: Old York School Fields
    • Thursday 6:00 p.m.
      • Locations:  Old York School Fields
    • Saturday morning or early afternoon
      • Locations:  Various (Old York School / White Oak Park / Central Middle School)
  • Team Size
    • Minimum 7 players per team
    • Maximum 10 players per team
  • Objectives / Overview of Rules
    • Learning the fundamentals of softball in a fun environment
    • Multiple practices will be scheduled before opening game and in-season
    • Games will be played with a “soft” safety-style softball (11-inch circumference)
    • Players will gain experience playing all the different defensive positions (except catcher)
    • Players will be hitting balls pitched by their coaches in games
    • All players play the field every inning
    • First six games: No outs are recorded; All players bat each inning
    • Starting in seventh game: Introduce three outs per inning (with five-run limit); After third swinging strike, batter has choice to receive one more swing or hit off tee
    • Starting in eleventh game: Batter is out after third swinging strike
    • Coaches will be on the field during game play to instruct players
    • Typically 3 to 4 inning games (depending on time/sunlight)

 

Majors Softball

  • Age Groups
    • 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Girls
  • Schedule and Locations
    • Tuesday 6:00 p.m.
      • Locations: White Oak Park, Fields 18 and 19
    • Thursday 6:00 p.m.
      • Locations:  White Oak Park, Fields 18 and 19
    • Saturday morning or early afternoon
      • Locations:  Various (White Oak Park / Central Middle School)
      • Possible inter-town games in nearby towns
  • Team Size
    • Minimum 10 players per team
    • Maximum 14 players per team
  • Objectives / Overview of Rules
    • Continue learning the fundamentals of softball in a fun environment
    • Multiple practices will be scheduled before opening game and in-season
    • Games will be played with a standard (not soft) 11-inch circumference softball
    • Games will have umpires and score will be kept
    • Five-run limit each inning
    • Catching position with full catcher’s gear will be added
    • All games will have player pitching
    • Front edge of pitching rubber shall be 35 feet from back point of home plate
    • Players must attend three pitching clinics before pitching in a game
    • Wide strike zone will be used as players develop pitching skills
    • All players will remain in batting order throughout the game
    • Players will be encouraged to continue gaining experience at many positions
    • No player will sit out more than two innings per game on defense
    • No coaches on the field
    • No stealing
    • Games up to six innings long (depending on time/sunlight)
    • Possible inter-town games with neighboring town(s)

 

Seniors Softball

  • Age Groups
    • 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Girls
  • Schedule and Locations
    • Monday 6:00 p.m.
      • Locations: White Oak Park, Fields 18 and 19
    • Wednesday 6:00 p.m.
      • Locations:  White Oak Park, Fields 18 and 19
    • Saturday morning or early afternoon
      • Locations:  Various (White Oak Park / Central Middle School)
      • Possible inter-town games in nearby towns
  • Team Size
    • Minimum 10 players per team
    • Maximum 14 players per team
  • Objectives / Overview of Rules
    • Continue learning the fundamentals of softball in a fun environment
    • Multiple practices will be scheduled before opening game and in-season
    • Games will be played with a standard (not soft) 12-inch circumference softball
    • Games will have umpires and score will be kept
    • Five-run limit each inning
    • All games will have player pitching
    • Front edge of pitching rubber shall be 40 feet from back point of home plate
    • All players will remain in batting order throughout the game
    • All players will be encouraged to gain additional infield experience
    • No player will sit out more than two innings per game on defense
    • No coaches on the field
    • Stealing of third base only
    • Games up to six innings long (depending on time/sunlight)
    • Possible inter-town games with neighboring town(s)
